Why QMH Statistics Club?
In recent years, the advancement of science has resulted in increased capacity of data storage, where various types of data are gathered at very high speeds. With the availability of such data, a keen interest has been grown among all industries and companies – to analyze them, forecast and make better plans for upcoming days. Because of this, new area of statistical science has been opened up, such as Data Science, Big Data Analytics etc. Job market is dominated by statisticians having expertise in these areas nowadays.
The existing curriculum of the Department for BS (Honors) and MS programs in Statistics heavily emphasizes on theories and their practices. Qazi Motahar Husain (QMH) Statistics Club was formed in order to enhance the interest of students to the existing curriculum and to familiarize them with the new advancement of Statistics. The primary objective of this club is to arrange seminars, workshops, lecture series and competitions for the students in such a way that they will be able to make themselves better candidates in the area of Statistics and Data Science.
Establishment And Goals
On April 03, 2019, the Department launched QMH Statistics Club by accepting the proposal of some students. Some selected goals of this club are:
- Expose our students to various interesting examples of data analysis through seminar and lecture series and invite them to competitions related to the sessions where prize and certificate will be given to the winners.
- Arrange competitions on data analysis and programming at different times.
- Arrange a longer version of competitions, a statistical fest. At the beginning this fest will be restricted to the department only, but later this will be extended to the national level.
- Create a group of students to attend international competitions.
- Invite guests who works in Statistics related field to give seminars and show how they have been using Statistics in real world.
- Invite experts and arrange workshop that will provide hands-on training in Data Science and/or Big data.
